Markets Direct, Inc.
Electronic Bookseller
Markets Direct, Inc. is a new and innovative company. We function as a direct
channel marketing organization. This innovative concept allows you to order
books any time of the day using our telecommunication software, MDI20. You can
purchase books using your Visa or Mastercard, or have them sent C.O.D. All you
need is an MS-DOS compatible computer with a Hayes compatible modem.
MDI20 allows you to enter your order on-screen in a plain-and-simple fashion. To
order a book, you'll need to enter the ISBN number, title and number of copies
desired. When complete, MDI20 will dial our toll-free number and transmit your
order; this usually takes only 30 seconds - fast and easy.
To assist you in making your selections, we have included MDICAT, an
electronic catalog containing most of the books we offer. Using MDICAT you can
browse, search by title or ISBN number, or scan titles for keywords. When you
find a book you want, "pick" it and MDICAT will store your selections in a
file. Your selection will then be loaded automatically by MDI20 when you are
ready to place your order!
Book sales are only the beginning. Soon Markets Direct will expand and offer
name brand software and computer hardware - all at discount prices.
If you have a business that could benefit from using MDI20's marketing
techniques, please call 1-800-748-1895 and ask for Bob Coyne, or write to:

Instructions for using MDICAT
MDICAT is an electronic catalog containing most of the books we offer. Using
MDICAT you can browse, search by title or ISBN number, or scan titles for
keywords. When you find a book you want, "pick" it and MDICAT will store your
selections in a file. Your selection will then be loaded automatically by MDI20
when you are ready to place your order!
MDICAT requires that its catalog file, MDICAT.FIL, be located in the default
directory and drive. If MDICAT cannot find its catalog file, it will abort and
return to MS-DOS. The catalog file is fairly large and takes a few moments to
load from diskette. MDICAT requires a minimum of 256k of free memory to run.
Once the catalog is loaded, MDICAT will display 15 selections from its
catalog. At the top of the screen key functions will be listed. At the bottom,
the current sort order and number of selections picked are shown. An asterisk
('*') to the left of a selection indicates that it has been "picked".
Key Functions
Several keys have functions assigned to them. When one of these keys are
pressed, MDICAT will perform a function. Here is a list of the keys MDICAT
recognizes and the functions assigned to them:
Key Name Function
[Ins] Adds the highlighted item to the pick list. You may pick up
to 5 items. Items that have been picked will be displayed
with an asterisk '*' to their left.
[Del] Removes the highlighted item from the pick list.
[Esc] Exit MDICAT and return to MD-DOS. The items in the pick list
will be stored in MDICAT.DAT in the current directory before
returning to MS-DOS.
[1] Search for a title. MDICAT asks you to enter the title you
want to search for. You may enter only part of the title;
however, it must be the first part for this function to find
a match. For example, searching for 'computer' would produce
a match with 'Computer Buyers Guide', but not with 'Personal
Computers And You'.
[2] Scan titles for keyword. MDICAT asks you to enter the text
you want to scan for. Scanning is slower than searching but
will produce a match with any title that contains the text
being searched for. For example, searching for 'computer'
would produce a match with both 'Computer Buyers Guide' and
'Personal Computers And You'.
[3] Repeat title scan. MDICAT continues scanning from its
current position. The text entered using functions [1] or
[2] will be used for the scan.
[4] Search for an ISBN number. MDICAT asks you to enter the ISBN
number you wish to search for. You may enter only part of
the ISBN number; however, it must be the first part for this
function to find a match. This function works exactly like
function [1] for titles.
[5] Scan ISBN numbers for a match. MDICAT asks you to enter the
text you want to scan for. This function works exactly
like function [2] for titles.
[6] Repeat ISBN scan. MDICAT continues scanning from its
current position. The text entered using keys [4] or [5]
will be used for the scan. This function works exactly like
function [3] for titles.
[Home] Go to the top of file based on current sort key. If the file
is being displayed by title, this function will take you to
the first title in the catalog. If the file is being
displayed by ISBN number, this function will take you to the
first ISBN number in the catalog.
[End] Go to the bottom of the file based on the current sort key.
[PgUp] Moves one page towards the top based on the current sort
key.
[PgDn] Moves one page towards the bottom based on the current sort
key.
[up] Moves one item towards the top of file based on the current
sort key.
[down] Moves one item towards the bottom of the file based on the
current sort key.
[left] Select Title as the sort key.
[right] Selects ISBN as the sort key.
[Esc] Exit MDI20 and return to MD-DOS. MDI20's configuration as well
as information in the order header will be stored in the file
MDI20.CNF in the current directory and drive.
[PgUp] Moves the cursor up to a previous section of the order form.
[PgDn] Moves the cursor down to the next section of the order form.
When in the bottom section, press this key to transmit the
order.
[up] Move up to previous field or line.
[down] Move down to next field. MDI20 will not let you pass a required
field if it is blank.
[left] Moves cursor left 1 character.
[right] Moves cursor right 1 character.
It is our goal to make MDI20 fast and easy to use. To achieve this we've tried
to keep it simple and to the point. If you have suggestions or comments
regarding MDI20, please write to us.
